Walter ≠ Bauhaus

Photo series and intervention at
Bauhaus-Museum Weimar, Weimar, Germany
2020-2026

The project "Walter ≠ Bauhaus" is an attempt to counterbalance the cis-male dominated perception of the history of Bauhaus with a new perspective. The classic black and white portraits depict female, nonbinary, inter, and trans people who study, work, and interact in context of Bauhaus today. This photo series is critizing the general structural underrepresentation of these groups of people in cultural and historical discourse, while creating a real space of representation at the same time.

The project "Walter ≠ Bauhaus" is based on an open call, which was made public via the Instagram page @walterisnotequaltobauhaus. Everyone who felt they belonged to the group of people addressed was able to participate. The portrayed individuals were able to decide for themselves how they wanted to be represented and chose the final photo for the series. More than one hundred portraits were taken as part of the series, showing the diversity of Bauhaus today.

In addition to the presentation on Instagram, the portrait series was shown as a façade projection on the outside walls of the Bauhaus Museum Weimar, Germany on 29.09.2020, in order to create a space of representation for the portrayed individuals as an intervention and temporary memorial, and to bring an impulse for discourse on the topic of equality, in general as well as explicitly in the context of the reception of the Bauhaus, into the public sphere.

One hundred years of predominantly cis-male representation of Bauhaus is more than enough. Walter is dead. Let's try to change the perception of Bauhaus!⁣⁣
